Shy Shelter Dog FLIPS OUT After Realizing He's Been Adopted

Shy Shelter Dog FLIPS OUT After Realizing He's Been Adopted

Oh, what a difference a day makes!  Animal rescue can be grueling work, but nothing makes it worthwhile as much as seeing the sheer transformative joy in the face of an animal whose life has been saved by human kindness.

Case in point: Benny.  Not as outgoing as some dogs--although thoroughly loving at heart--Benny's time was almost up.  He'd landed at the Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter in Gardena, California.  For weeks, Benny languished in his kennel, consistently overlooked.  Until the day one human family showed up and said the magic words: "We're taking him home."  If you can hold back happy tears at seeing Benny's unbridled ecstasy upon realizing that he has his forever family at last, you're better than we are!

The only thing as good as living with an animal is saving an animal's life.  Adopting from shelters lets you do both.  To learn about adopting a pet, or to find out other ways you can help, visit your local animal shelter.

Rescue Cat Turns Broken Jaw into a Gorgeous Smile

Rescue Cat Turns Broken Jaw into a Gorgeous Smile

Last year, Duchess the Miracle Cat was brought in to a Texas animal hospital after being hit by a car. Many animal hospitals would simply have euthanized a stray with injuries as profound as hers.  But the Homer's Heroes at Adobe Animal Hospital had enough compassion to move mountains and decided to perform surgery.

“Most places would’ve just euthanized her, but by some miracle Duchess got lucky and Dr. Meyer took a chance and repaired her jaw,” said Crystal Tate, Duchess’ owner. “She was in recovery for about a month, she was on a feeding tube and lots of medicine. Her chances of survival were slim, but she was a fighter and pulled through. I met her the day I arrived at the clinic for my first day and ended up bringing her home with me less than a week later.”

Duchess still has a ways to go, but her days of living un-cared-for on the streets are over for good.  Her injuries may only be temporary, but we have a feeling she'll be smiling her happy smile for years to come!

Watch: Everything you ever wanted to know about cat behavior, in just 5 minutes

Watch: Everything you ever wanted to know about cat behavior, in just 5 minutes

Cat videos are everywhere on the web, but rarely do they actually explain what it is that makes our mysterious feline friends tick.

Enter Tony Buffington.

Tony Buffington is a well-known veterinarian, professor and “cat guru,” and his knowledge provides the script for an animated TED-Ed video titled, “Why do cats act so weird?”

We think this video is purrfectly adorable, and it provides a handy short-hand for understanding why our cats do some of the things they do--why they like to pounce on our ankles (they evolved to stalk, pounce, and kill), and why they have such a strong instinct to squeeze themselves into tight spots (having evolved as both predator and prey, cats learned how to stay out of sight).  And purring happens at a frequency that can promote tissue regeneration--so encouraging your cat to sleep on your face just might be an inexpensive alternative to a face lift.

Of course, there will always be some things that science just can't explain, and the mysterious bonds that have formed between humans and cats over the eons may be one of them.  But this video is a pretty pawsome primer on Cat Knowledge 101 nonetheless.  Watch and rejoice!

Refugee Cat Treks Thousands Of Miles To Reunite With His Family!

Everyone’s heard about the refugee crisis in Europe as tens of thousands of survivors and asylum-seekers from the war-torn Middle East flood westward in search of safety for themselves and their families.  But human crises are usually animal crises as well–and the plight of companion animals separated from their humans in all the chaos has received far less coverage.

featured and cover

Hopeful stories are hard to find amid all the turmoil.  But every once in a while, a glimmer of hope appears.  Kunush the cat was lost in Greece after his family’s escape from Iraq.  His family was relocated to Norway before they were able to find him, and Kunush was left on his own.  It seemed like a hopeless situation.  But sometimes miracles do happen–and Kunush was lucky enough to be one of them.  Check out this amazing story of survival and reunion below!
